Observation #3

The school I'm observing is Learning for leadership charter school, I observe at with ESL teacher Ms. Zahra Farah who helps all the english learners students. The majority of my 15 observation hours was spend with elementary and middle schoolers musty reading with them because most of them are still at the process of learning reading and writing. Little of this hours was spend helping the seniors with their final research and presentation project, when they come to Mz. Zahra's room for help, I did this same project last year so its easy for me to help them now.

There was this beautiful moment that I had while observing that stood out to me the most, so while reading with second and first graders there was student named Hibo who would stop me now and then to ask me a questions such as, "What's happening now?" "What does this word mean?" and I had to stop and explain to her despite how annoyed I felt because I'm not a patient meaning I can't work with kids, but I had to smile and continue. when we were done reading M.s Zahra gave them an easy quiz asking them about the story, and I left to help a senior with little research, it was when I came back Ms. Zahra told me that Hibo did an outstanding with the test and she seemed to understand the reading that she answered the questions well. I understood that moment that all teachers have to be patient in order for students to learn and gain knowledge, it's patient teachers that students learn from, and even though I felt annoyed I managed to care and answer her questions which helped her do really well on her test. That moment I learned how to be patient with students and that's something huge for me something I never thought I would learn from a first grader. From that day and Hibo only reads with me and Ms. Zahra lets her wait for me sometimes when I'm little late.

Testing is a priority thing for this schools because as a small charter school they have to do better to define their school, I notice that teachers give more homework and do lots of work during the testing season so students can do little better. I remember when I was doing my 10 observation hour for technology for educators and I did it with Mr. Brandon the math teacher at Learning for leadership charter school I noticed that he give out questions examples of the stander test, and I would hear him say to eight graders, "Try your best to do the easy questions, because if you managed to answer all the easy questions well that's like half of the test. And make sure to take your time." I think the school is not doing that well with the stander test because half of the students are english learners.

As you can see in the chart the school is doing little better than 2011 because they've been working hard sense than and doing whatever they can to help the students, I asked M.s Zahra what she feels about the stander testings and she seemed annoyed about them she said, "most of the students I help are english learner that are still learning the basic academic of english and its not fair for them to take a hard test." and that exactly what I feel about english learners taking hard test like the stander testings.

  1. That first chart...what is it? All students performance on what exam? Just students at the school or all students? Share more of what I am looking at.

Great observation about students who are English Language Learners. How do the test scores look like for that population?
