observation #5

Context:
I did my 30 hours of observation at  Learning For Leadership Charter, and I did my observation with Ms. Zahra ESL teacher who helps English learns, most of them being Somalian students, some Hispanic, and some African American students. While observing I helped students with reading, writing, vocabulary words which helps them lear new english words, I enjoyed helping Ms. Zahra she's more like friend to me than a teacher, she helped me with my senior project last year, and I loved working with the students even though some of the times was little annoyed to me, but over the course of observing with M.s Zahra and her students I came to learn how to be patient with students therefor I know how to help them well and communicate with them. I really enjoyed observing that I did more than 30 hours lol, I mean the students were so great and needed help with learning english. I think I will continue helping due to the fact that students really need help and Ms. Zahra would appreciate little help.

Evidence of family engagement:
Learning for leadership is a small charter school which makes it easy for families to know one another, most to the students families know each other because they all meet when they come to the school events, and the office welcomes parents very well, but what I've noticed is that families usually come when their child is in trouble and the school mostly makes phone calls to parents when their chid did something bad during school hours. Still there are little portion of families that comes to walk around to check their kids and be updated but those only make up to maybe 8% out of the 100% parents. Classes welcome families but as I said they don't come unless their  child did something terrible that the school had to tell them. The school sends grade reposts and when they had events. And from what I learned from the readings  about how to engage families, I would say that Learning for Leadership is poor when it comes to families being engaged with the school, and just to call parents when their kids have done something bad is not a good way to contact families and build a relationship with them.

Strengths:
temper management is one of the strong strength that most teacher at Learning for leadership has, I mean they are so patient with students and manage to stay calm despite the students acts who really have behaviorism issues cause I saw lots of students talking back to teachers, disrespecting them, and some of the just walking out of classes including my eight grade sister who walks out of science class or go to the class to sleep. I think teachers calls families to tell on the students because they don't know what to do with them, but other than that teachers really respect students and hold their tempers around students. I remember once when one of the students talked bad with Ms. Zahra saying that this class is useless to him now that he knows english and he can managed to stay with his classmates instead of coming to her class and read with students who don't know how to read. To which she replied, "You are right you know english now and you can speak well, but still you need to be here to improve your language skills so you can do much better that those who were born here." That was strong respond even though it didn't work on the students, and she had to send him to read alone in the conner.

question for Reflection:
Am I ready to be teacher, and manage to hold a class together?

 Lingering thoughts or concern:
I think I would encourage all future teachers to do observation hours before going forward with their career because it will help them a lot to figure out what they want to teach, who they want to teach, and it will make them learn lost of things about schools and students and everything related to this career.
