Bilingual
education is the article that actually defines my philosophy as a teacher.
Language is one of the things that defines people’s cultural identity, so if religion
is one of human right, language should be too. Students should be allowed to
learn subjects in a language that they understand very well, language that
their parents understands as well. Today many immigrant students face a series
problems while learning English. Some students fall into depression because
they feel that they can’t learn English fast enough to take the stander test.
It’s hard
for immigrant students to develop academic writing, reading, and speaking in
less than two years, it also much harder for their parents to learn new
language. Therefor schools needs to educate students in their own language. I
remember when I came to the United States without knowing any English word. I
didn’t think it was hard to learn new language until the day that I went to
take my permit test. Even though I knew all the information I need it to pass
the test I failed, because my English still wasn’t good enough, and I didn’t
understand many of the words. After falling three times, someone told me that
they have the test in many different languages. My forth time I take the test
in Arabic to which I got 94%. From day till today I believe that diverse
country like America really needs a bilingual education, so students can be in
the same level and no kid is left behind due to language problems. Language is
influencing education policy and schools and many students are not
understanding what they are learning in order for them to take test or do their
homework’s, while the students who know the language are succeeding and doing
well.
I’m hoping
that when I become a teacher I will have the right to teach my subject in
different languages so every student in my class understand what I’m teaching.
I would love to make conference with my students parents without having a
translators. I want my students to feel accepted and be proud of their culture
and language. I want their parents to be part of what their kids are learning
so they have the ability to help them. I didn’t had that chance meaning that my
mother never got the chance to be part of my education because she doesn’t
speak English well, I was alone thought all my school years, I don’t want the
same for my students. I also hope by the time I become teacher most of the
schools regain the right to teach bilingual education.
